What is ADHD?
ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) is a behavioral disorder. It makes it hard for you to focus and causes hyperactivity (excessive energy) and impulsivity (acting without thinking). These problems make it difficult for you to keep up at school or work. Daily activities like cleaning and conversations suffer. ADHD affects more than 8% of children aged 4-17, and around 4% of adults 18-44 have ADHD. With expert treatment, people with ADHD can succeed in their studies and careers and lead rewarding lives.
What are the symptoms of ADHD?
Common symptoms of ADHD include:
- Difficulty paying attention
- Constantly losing things
- Difficulty finishing tasks on time
- Easily getting bored
- Difficulty catching up
- Being easily distracted
- Difficulty remembering tasks
- Not listening when spoken to
- Continual daydreaming
- Difficulty waiting
- Problems sitting still
- Talking nonstop
- Difficulty doing quiet activities
Some people primarily suffer symptoms of inattention, while others are more hyperactive and impulsive. If you have combined ADHD, you display both kinds of symptoms.
Typical ADHD behaviors are things most children do at times. But someone with ADHD displays them far more frequently and consistently for six months or longer.
How is ADHD diagnosed?
No single test will diagnose ADHD, so you need to meet with PHILIP OFOSU-MENSAH for an evaluation. Dr. Philip Ofosu-Mensah uses his expertise to rule out other causes like psychiatric disorders, problems at school, and other behavioral conditions.
Many children still go undiagnosed during their school years and struggle with ADHD symptoms as they become adults. PHILIP OFOSU-MENSAH diagnoses and treats anyone over 12 who has ADHD symptoms.
How is ADHD treated?
Dr Philip offers several treatments for ADHD, including:
Medication
Stimulants are the most widely used medication for ADHD. Nonstimulants and antidepressants can also help some people.
Behavioral therapy
Behavioral therapy helps you manage the behaviors that cause you a problem. You learn to recognize feelings that lead to unwanted behaviors and control them so that you encounter fewer difficulties in daily life.
It’s not unusual for children and adults with ADHD to have other problems, including:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Bipolar disorder
- Tourette’s syndrome (repeated, uncontrollable sounds and movements)
- Sleep disorders
- Bed-wetting
- Learning disabilities
- Oppositional defiant disorder (refusal to accept another’s authority)
- Conduct disorder (persistently violent or destructive behaviors)
Having these problems makes life even more challenging for someone with ADHD. Dr Philip has extensive experience treating patients with more than one mental health condition.
